Ribadesella Beach, Santa Marina is one of the four of the Council and one of the most extensive urban beaches in Asturias.

The so-called Playa de los Picos de Europa is the great sandy area where the Sella River, the most emblematic of Asturias, will die. A river-shaped mouth that profiles the two margins of the Villa de Ribadesella.

On the one hand its old town. On the other, the beach area. Both parts separated by the Bridge of Sella, goal of the legendary International Sella Descent competition.

The beach of Ribadesella of fine grain and toasted color, competes in the First Division of the Urban Beaches of the Cantabrian. It could even be selected among the five most beautiful, rivaling others of more enjundia, such as the archives of San Lorenzo in Gijón, La Concha in San Sebastián or Riazor in A Coruña.

Sella Estuary.

At the beginning of the beach, the aforementioned Sella River forms an estuary invaded by the sea. A beautiful curve where the Sella deposits the sediments it drags from its birth in the Picos de Europa.

A semi-delta of sparse proportions known as the Punta del Arenal. Here, majestic appears the first of the Palaces of Indians that boast the beautiful sailor’s walk that surrounds Ribadesella Beach.

The setting of La Playa itself is a beautiful setting. A frame of extraordinary beauty framed by the silhouettes of the Somos and Corberu Mountains. With the Pozu Tips and El Caballo shaping the horizon.

Along with the beauty of the place, it shows another series of attractions that differentiate it from beaches of undoubted beauty. An open-air museum that exhibits a site of icnitas (dinosaur footprints) and a rosary of prime examples of so-called Indiana Architecture.

At any time of the year the beach offers stimuli to our senses. If in the summer season its warmer waters invite bathing and playing with the waves, during the wettest seasons it is a spectacle to observe the fury of the sea during a storm. Waves dragging stone and sand and banging and jumping the protective wall fence produces an exciting feeling between stupor and respect.

Facilities, services and access.

With an extension of 1,200 meters, its sandy area is transformed into a cliff-protected stone that extends to the neighboring town of Tereñes.

Ribadesella Beach is equipped with all the services and facilities of an urban beach. It has toilets and showers, bins and cleaning service, drinking water, beach bars. In high season even with a traveling library.

During the summer it also has a lifeguard team and a public address service that covers possible emergencies. Along the entire beach are distributed a series of stairs and ramps that facilitate access to the sand.

Likewise, the road or walking access is carried out from different pedestrian streets, which helps the non-massification.

As for the road access, it is mainly carried out, from the street Dionisio Ruisánchez. All the parking spaces are available. For those who access from Coronel Bravo street, surrounding the estuary, there are also parking spaces available.

Although the space with more parking spaces available is located in the westernmost part of the beach, next to the road that leads to Tereñes.

A showcase of Indiana Architecture.

During the first years of the century it emerged aligned with the promenade of Santa Marina Beach, one of the most original, interesting and beautiful architectural ensembles of the Asturian territory.

Beautiful buildings, known as Casonas, Palacios or Chalés de Indianos. Eclectic, colonial style and colorful and excessively ornate.

Today, they are proudly highlighting their slender figure on the balustrade of the Paseo de la Playa.

Deposit of icnitas.

At the westernmost end of the beach the end of the walk leads us to Punta’l Pozu. Here a metal platform twisted by the embistes of the waves allows us to access the pedral.

There are several strata that show different types of footprints. Traces of sauropod dinosaurs belonging to the Jurassic.

However, when access is a certain risk and its sighting is difficult, we advise discovering them using the free Guided Tours service organized by the Ribadesella City Council.

Sports.

Santa Marina offers several incentives for the practice of Surfing. That’s why it’s common to see surfers catching waves at any time of the year. Apart from surfing there are several companies that offer other types of activities encompassed within the so-called “Adventure Sport”.

From the quiet swing of Paddle Surf, to the rental of jet skis to visit the nearby cliffs. Or the boat rides over the oscillating waters of the Cantabrian. There are several of the activities that nearby companies offer in Ribadesella.

Horse Race.

Every Easter the sandy area of Ribadesella Beach becomes a natural racecourse. With more than 25 years of existence, the event hosts every year more visitors attracted by the visual spectacle offered by thoroughbred horses running to gallop.

Camino de Santiago.

It is common to observe pilgrims walking along the wall of the Paseo de la Playa de Ribadesella. Currently the Camino arrives after crossing the Bridge of the estuary of Sella. Once there was no such time as this, the estuary was crossed by a boat belonging to the Guild of Mareantes of the port of Ribadesella.

Hermitage of Guide.

From the beach Although it does not fall within the beach of Ribadesella itself, it is necessary to cite the Hermitage of the Fishermen of Ribadesella. Because its stylized silhouette dominating Mount Corberu is the protagonist of the visual panorama that makes up the environment.
